DESCRIPTION:A Talk on Heaven\, Hell\, Purgatory and the Afterlife in Catholic Theology\nby Rev. Dr. Matthew Hendzel\, PhD \nOver two sessions\, Deacon Matthew Hendzel\, SJ\, will discuss both the Catholic Church’s teachings on the afterlife\, and the history and theology behind these teachings. Following the Church’s classic framework of the Four Last Things (Death\, Judgment\, Heaven and Hell) for understanding the afterlife\, the first presentation will explore the topics of Death\, Judgment and Hell on July 6th\, and the second will explore Purgatory and Heaven on July 13th. \nDeacon Matthew graduated with a PhD in Systematic Theology in 2019 from the University of St Michael’s College. For the past eight years\, Sister Gabriel has been an essential member of the parish team\, serving as the parish’s pastoral associate. Her ministry has involved bereavement ministry\, spiritual direction\, faith formation\, retreats\, work with the Social Justice Committee\, and coordinating essential aspects of the parish’s Winter Welcome Table outreach that provides a meal for many in our community. The parish community is profoundly grateful to Sister Gabriel for all that she has been and done for our community. We pray that as she begins this new stage of her journey\, the Lord will continue to bless her and keep her in his care. \nThe parish will host a social in the auditorium to celebrate Sister Gabriel following the 11:15 am Sunday Mass on August 13\, 2023. \nMay God bless Sister Gabriel with a happy and healthy retirement for many years to come!

SUMMARY:Being the Person God Wants You to Be(come): Virtues\, Vices\, and the Image of God
DESCRIPTION:Over four talks\, Meghan Bowen will discuss Catholic teachings on how to live the moral life so that we can become more and more in the image of God. The talks will cover the topics of the moral life as part of our loving relationship with God (Sept. 27)\, how we learn to be virtuous and form our conscience (Oct. 4)\, what the virtues are and how we live them out (Oct. 11)\, and how our sins help us learn to be better (Oct. 18). All presentations will begin at 7PM in the auditorium. Meghan is a PhD Candidate at Regis College\, studying Moral Theology. She also holds an MA Theology from Saint Paul University (Ottawa). Her current research on is St. Augustine’s theology of marriage. \nMeghan Bowen is a PhD candidate at Regis College (Toronto). Her research examines Augustine’s theology of marriage within his historical context in hopes of bringing new insights and consideration to current theological discussions of marriage. Along with an MA Theology (Saint Paul University\, Ottawa)\, Meghan also holds an MA Ethnomusicology (Memorial University of Newfoundland\, St. John’s).

DESCRIPTION:On the eve of Pope Francis’ release of a follow-up document to his 2015 encyclical Laudato Si’: On Care for Our Common Home\, St. Peter’s Social Justice Committee invites you to join us for a Screening of The Letter on Tuesday\, October 3\, 2023 at 7 pm\, in the Parish Hall.  The Letter tells the story of a journey to Rome of frontline leaders to discuss the encyclical letter\, Laudato Si’\, with Pope Francis. The exclusive dialogue with the Pope\, included in the film\, offers a revealing insight into the personal history of Pope Francis and stories never seen since he became the Bishop of Rome.  The evening will be facilitated by Sister Lois Anne Bordowitz\, FCJ. \nWith the October 4th release of Pope Francis’ second Encyclical\, Laudato Si’: An Ongoing Dialogue of the Signs of the Times\, please consider joining the Social Justice Committee on Tuesday\, November 28\, 2023 at 7 pm\, in the Parish Hall for a conversation about this important update.
