Children’s Liturgy of the Word

What’s this Program About?

Children’s Liturgy of the Word is intended to help children ages 6 to 12 years (Grade 1-6) better understand the readings of the day for Sunday Mass. The Scripture text is modified for children’s listening and comprehension skills.

Children are dismissed from Mass before the Liturgy of the Word begins. They are brought to the Reflection Room where they listen to the First Reading and the Gospel. Together they share reflections on the Word of God, accompanied by an activity.

Children are able to gather as a community and listen to the Word of God in a format they can understand. This is an opportunity for them to learn, grow, and share their knowledge of God’s Word. They also learn of God’s love for them, and how they can return that love to others.

Volunteer as a Program Facilitator

This program is offered during the 11:15 a.m. Mass on Sundays. The children are dismissed before the Liturgy of the Word and do not return until the Offertory procession takes place. The total time involved is about 40 minutes. The assigned adult facilitators accompany the children to the Reflection Room (and thus are absent from the assembly for the readings and the homily). Facilitators are scheduled to volunteer approximately once a month and can choose to lead the program or assist.

Qualifications to become a Program Facilitator

Candidates should possess a love of children as well as a willingness and desire to teach. Ministers should also set a good example of Christian life and attend Mass regularly. All candidates who wish to be a lead facilitator are expected to complete a police background check in accordance with the Archdiocese of Toronto’s volunteer screening process.
