This happened after the homily when I called Sister Ann of the Franciscan Missionaries up so that we could say good-bye to her as she was preparing to depart Toronto and return to her community’s motherhouse in Montreal. She will be going to live in the community’s convalescence wing. At eighty-four years of age, Sister Ann spoke to me openly about the fact that she was going to face the final part of her journey on earth. Sister Ann had been a member of this parish community since 1969 and had worked very closely with some of the poor in our parish. Now the reason I got teary-eyed when I called her forward is not because she has been a friend of mine for many years. In fact, I have only known her for the little more than four months that I have been pastor here. In the short time that I have known her, I have really only spoken to her a few times. What made me teary-eyed was the beautiful donation that she made to the parish’s Winter Welcome Table as she was departing. Sister Ann had received a few gifts before her departure from Toronto. Although she herself has very little as an individual, she came to see me before she left and said that she wanted to donate the gifts that she had received as going away presents to the parish’s Winter Welcome Table because she wanted to feed the poor. Her generosity and care for the poor moved me greatly. Her simple and beautiful gesture was a powerful statement about her mission as a Franciscan Missionary and the call to care for the poor that is at the heart of her community’s charism. Her generosity reminded me very much of that generosity that is shown by the poor widow in today’s Gospel as she gives from the little that she has to care for the Temple.

The theme running through all of this Sunday’s readings is generosity and the way in which we are called to give back to God from that which we have received. In the first reading from the Book of Kings, the prophet Elijah asks a poor widow to feed him from the little that she has. Although she is at first hesitant, Elijah promises her that her jar of flour will never go empty if she trusts in God and cares for God’s prophet. The Psalm asks that we should praise God for how generous He has been to us. Each time that we come to the Eucharist, we are invited to give thanks to God for all of the blessings that He has bestowed upon us through the death of His Son. The second reading from the Letter to the Hebrews speaks of the nature of God’s generosity as it speaks of God’s sending His Son to die for our sins so that He might intercede for us before His heavenly Father in Heaven. Finally, in the Gospel, we hear of the generous widow who donates from the little that she has to support the Temple and care of God’s house. Jesus holds up her generosity as a model to those who are gathered in the Temple. Whether we like it or not, one of the lessons of this Sunday’s Gospel message is that we are all called to support God’s temple by donating generously. In fact, the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that among the precepts of the Church is the fact that the “faithful have the duty of providing for the material needs of the Church, each according to his (or her) abilities” (CCC # 2043).

Some of you might not know this, but the parish has a website. Whenever it is my turn to preach, I try to put my homily online so that it is also on the website for people to read. Each week, I try to give the homily a title so that people will consider reading it. This week I have given the homily the title “A Very Unpopular Homily.” Nobody likes a homily on money. The truth is that I hate giving them. In the twenty-three years that I have been a priest, I have only had to do this once before. This is only the second time that I have had to give such a homily. It is my great hope that I will not have to do so again. The only reason that I am giving it is because I have to do so right now.

The very simple fact is that our parish does not have the money to continue paying its bills.

Since arriving here at the parish there have been a number of repairs that have had to be made. There were open holes in the rectory’s roof where animals were coming and going. If left un-repaired, the damage would have only gotten worse. These repairs will cost about $25,000.00. There were more than twenty broken windows in the rectory and church which had been fixed only with duck-tape. If left un-repaired for the winter, these would have cracked and broken completely open. These repairs cost over $5,000.00. These are not repairs that are in any way luxurious. They are simple and necessary expenditures that were absolutely necessary for the upkeep of the property and buildings.

Many people have no idea how much it can cost to run a parish. In the New Year it is my intention to have the Finance Committee report to you regularly. However, today, I would like to give you just a small example of some of the costs of running your parish.

Some people are completely unaware that priests get paid. Each month I am paid a salary of about $3,000.00 (before taxes). This is the same salary that is paid to every priest in the diocese, no matter what the size of the parish. In the past this same salary was paid to the Paulist Fathers. While the parishioners of St. Peter’s pay my salary, there is so little money available, Fr. Yaw’s salary is paid by the Archdiocese of Toronto and I am very grateful for this. If you think we get paid too much, I figured it out according to the number of hours we work each week and it is less than minimum wage.

Your donations also pay for the salary of a parish secretary, accountant and caretaker.

The musicians who add so much to our liturgical celebrations are paid and a stipend is given to the choir at the 11:15 am Mass on Sundays.

Insurance and heating for our buildings each cost about $1,000.00 per month, and electricity is about half that cost.

Many weeks when people come to Mass they tell me all the things that should be fixed or that I should purchase for the Church. Recently I have started to ask them where I should get the money from. One person indicated to me that they thought the Pope paid all of the parish’s bills. I assure you that the Pope does not pay any of our bills. The Church might be very wealthy, but it is wealthy in property and art, not cash. Occasionally, the Church will pay the expenses of a missionary parish where there are only a few people to support the Church. In a city like Toronto, each parish must pay its own expenses. Our own parish complex is an extremely valuable piece of property. That unfortunately only makes it more costly to maintain and care for. As each week the parish collection is about $3,500.00 per week, we are about $1,500.00 per week short of what it costs to run this parish.

Since I arrived in the parish a few months ago, I have met with the parish’s Finance Committee 3 times. I intend to do so regularly and discuss with them how we can go about making the parish’s finances much more transparent to you. In the New Year, a member of the parish Finance Committee will present you with a Finance Statement and we will continue to look at how we can cut costs.

Today what I need to ask you to do is to consider giving more generously to your parish community. I am not asking you to do anything different from what I myself have done in every parish I have been assigned to serve. Each month, I give $100.00 to the parish. That works out to $25.00-$20.00 per week, depending on how many Sundays there are in a month. Like you, I also give to other charities. In every parish that I have been assigned, I have been one of the largest donors to ShareLife and I intend to donate about a month of my pay per year (after taxes) to Family of Faith Campaign. I am not telling you this to brag, but so that you know that I am doing the same thing that I ask of you to consider.

Most of the people who donate to our parish each week donate $5.00 per week. If that is really all that you can afford, I do not want to ask you to change your donation. Thank you for giving so generously if that is all you can afford. However, my sense is that most people who donate $5.00 per week do so because that is what they have been donating for the past 25 years. If you do donate $5.00 per week, please think about what $5.00 buys today and consider giving more. In fact, if you are one who donates $5.00 a week, I would ask you to consider donating $10.00 per week. If you donate $10.00 per week, I would ask you to consider donating $20.00 per week. I would ask everyone to consider the last time they increased their donations to the parish and consider doing so again now. If you do not donate at all, please consider beginning to do so. I promise you that your money will be used on your parish. It will not leave the country to support a religious order.

Each week you can read in the bulletin how much our weekly collection is. For the past 20 or more years it has remained at about $3,500.00 per week. If we are going to be able to pay our bills, it needs to increase to about $5,000.00 to $6,000.00 per week.

I know for a fact that people hate homilies about money. However, I promise you that the only person who hates them more than you is me. I hate speaking about money. I did not become a priest to talk about money. I only do so when I have to. I am not talking to you about this because I want to. I am speaking to you about it because I have to. I am doing it because I care about your church and I care about you. I want you to have a Church that is well maintained, safe and clean. Please help me to never have to speak about this again. It is an extremely unpleasant subject to have to preach about and I am only doing so because I wish to serve you and your parish well and honestly.

Fr.
